We have completed the first month of school. Most students are adjusting the the pace and work load in Discovery. Yes they now have homework nightly, but they still have weekly homework like they did in Primary.
In Language Arts, they are given spelling and or vocabulary words on Friday. They need to make Vocabulary Cards for the Vocabulary words AND complete a Vocabulary activity to be turned in the following Friday. Varsity students also get a weekly spelling words, so they only have 5 Vocabulary words a week. Varsity students need to complete the spelling homework in addition to vocabulary.
In Humanities, they get a new writing prompt or assignment on Monday. The first rough draft is due on Wednesday in class. During class time, we work on revising and editing to make the paper better. Then they are able to type their paper to be turned in the following Monday. If they don't have the first rough draft on Wednesday, they spend class time writing the first draft, BUT they don't get the homework points for completing the homework NOR the opportunity to edit and revise to make their writing better.
Homework does two things. First, it helps students with time management. When they get to college, most of the work they do will be out of the class. They have workroom time 3 days a week that could be used to do homework or work on projects. The second thing it does is give up more time to work on writing in class. By this point in their educational careers, they should be able to write a first draft. Having this done before coming to class, gives us class time to work on improving their writing using what they have already written.
I hope this explains the homework expectations clearly.
